Tidal bores of England, Scotland and Wales

Tidal bores are spectacular surges that travel inland in some estuaries on the highest tides. Of the hundred or so worldwide, about twenty occur in England, Scotland and Wales. They are one of the natural spectacles of the world and Tidal Bores of England, Scotland and Wales describes their causes and some of the best known in the UK.

This is a very thorough handbook for travelers and nature buffs. While it’s a detailed and helpful guide to tidal bores, it’s also a useful directory for the surrounding areas where tidal bores can be experienced, as mother nature is not always entirely dependable. NETGALLEY

Hydrometeorology: Forecasting and Applications

This third edition, published in 2024, explores some of the latest techniques used to provide forecasts or predictions for a wide range of water-related applications such as for flood, drought and pollution incidents. The practical uses can range from decisions on whether to issue a flood warning through to providing longer-term advice such as on when to plant and harvest crops, issue drought early warnings or how to operate reservoirs for water supply and hydropower schemes.

The first edition received an Honorable Mention in the prestigious Atmospheric Science Librarians International (ASLI) nominations for the best book of the year in the fields of meteorology, climatology and atmospheric sciences.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to get an overview of recent developments in meteorological forecasting techniques that are reflected in the performance of operational hydrologic models, as well as to water decision makers who will benefit from the improved forecasts…I am not aware of any other book as comprehensive as this one that covers all aspects of hydrometeorology.”  From a review of the first edition in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

Flash floods: Forecasting and Warning

Flash floods typically develop in a period a few hours or less and can arise from heavy rainfall and other causes, such as dam or flood defence breaches and ice jam breaks. This book describes recent developments in techniques for monitoring and forecasting the development of flash floods and providing flood warnings. Topics include rainfall and river monitoring, nowcasting, Numerical Weather Prediction, rainfall-runoff modelling, and approaches to the dissemination of flood warnings and provision of an emergency response.

Provides an international perspective, drawing on recent research and examples from Europe, the USA and elsewhere. Treats the topic in an integrated way, discussing research findings from meteorology and hydrology, and some of the issues surrounding the provision of an effective response to flood warnings (e.g. evacuation of properties).
